how to do everything you wanted to in 3 hours in nyc...........

well it's not everything, but I hit everything I had planned. my friend Am stayed in tonight and relaxed while I hit the town, first a subway down to 14th St and came up on 16th in Chelsea and back over to the Pop Up Flea to by this vintage cotton plaid shirt I really wanted yesterday and it was still there, so ya know that was meant to be. ha , then to another table with Brooklyn business where I purchases some awesome airplane printed wrapping paper. they had solid quality travel bags too btw.  Anyway i shopped around all the other highly stylized random new up and comer labels...although most are the same drab grey and navy solid crew neck this or that or neutral plaid shirt etc, all organic and nationally sourced materials etc etc blah blah. ....:)
next the metro up to Bryant Park and the Penguin store there, it was closed alas! walked over to Times square and stopped in at the Swatch store as planned, got some watches and had the best time talking to the kid talking me about his watches and my watches and what would I want to buy. ha, next a few more stores, and while passing the Levi's store found a nice plaid shirt on sale, will post photos later...did some people watching, lots of santa crawl costumes all over, the guys in onezies, which I guess are a Christmas pajama sort of costume are something ha.  of course coming back to the apr and seeing the single guys not with his group was funny because you know they feel funny just walking around in a Santa suit, well I took the subway back down to 29th and walked back, stopping for some gelatto yum!  am going to shower up and hit the sack, my friend is already sleeping. another big day tomorrow and hope to rest up. But I tell ya all this excellent weather has really ruined all my planned hat and jacket with outfits to wear. j/k cheers :)

big apple.............

Hello from NYC!  I've been having a wonderful time, it's not as fun as being on my own but perhaps that's okay because we are having more relaxing times, down time in the apartment.  We are staying across the street from the Empire State Building. I've decided it's tall and all with fun red lights on at night, but the Chrysler Building, now that is really something beautifully designed.
anyway, I was up at 5 til 4am sharp on Friday morning, at my friend Am's place by 4:10 and then at the airport by 4:30, checked in her bag and waited by the gate.  I was pretty excited to bring my new luggage that zips up in the middle, and pleased to find it's still carryone size!!! perfect!! my other carryon bag, both of which came from the MonocleX Porter at Monocle magazine, well anyway, my Boston Bag that I usually carryon with me everywhere I go, I tucked that inside my new bag, and plan to fill it up with stuff to carryon the way home, and then I brought this plastic woven zip up market bag to place over my new luggage and check that in on the way home. Southwest checks one luggage in free.
We arrived into Newark by 11:30 and got to our apartment by 12:30, I'd hoped to get an express bus, where you pay $30 or so for a round trip ticket into manhattan and back, BUT she preferred to just get straight to our place with our stuff. SO it was $62 for sharing a taxi cab from Newark plus $20 for the tolls? and of course we tip the $8 change when paying our $90!!! gee whiz, I won't be doing that again, but for the sake of getting here quick and getting our day started, it's what we decided to do....vacation after all I suppose.
We love the place,  one bedroom apartment on the 12th floor large fron room with comfy couches, a big screen tv, open kitchen, and then a bedroom and bathroom.  I'm on the couch and she has the bedroom ha.  there;s really nothing here but furniture and some general bathroom and kitchen items, so we figure no one really lives here, it seems more like a corporate place for people to stop in and stay and then make money on airbnb in the meantime. ?? hmmm.
we started right out walking down 5th avenue and then broadway, madison square and then union square.  on the way i came across this really fun place called Flying TIger, it is a Danish company sort of like Ikea or I don't know what but full of fun low priced stuff, what my friend called junk, but what I thought were fun things for all sort of gifts for kids of friends of mine and family etc... I was excited to find it since I love anything Danish!!! ah yeah
at Union square I found some great ornaments and I might go back for a NYC tshirt I like. she boght some 5th and Madison brand scented oil and sticks... she loves candles since she lives with lots of cats so this was another scent option I guess.  we went over toward the POP UP FLEA on 18th street this weekend but they weren't open until 3pm so......we went to Marshalls and TJ Maxx because she wanted to shop there.  You may begin to see the mismatch of our entire philosophy and approach to shopping. how can I shop over my budget and spending as a public school teacher and she spend like a miser making 3 or more times as me as a vet?!? ha ha, she is super thrifty I tell you what!
so we went to the pop up flea next which I was pretty thrilled to see everything but I was feeling a bit discouraged dragging my friend around.  guys, it's okay I was prepared before this trip that it was about us site seeing and not my usual shop around and see everything at stores... I spoke with a lot of the sellers there who were all so excited and proud of talking up the products. I had a blast at the few booths I chose to check out. I found one brand Word something that sold little notebooks and I got the perfect gift for my foodie friend, this sort of notebook where you can write down notes about places you go to eat. I also got this daily entry book thing for me.
we walked around a bit more and then came back and dumped our things offand then left for dinner.
Subway down to Little Italy, walked around and found a place for dinner. yummy Italian food.had some wine and then we came back up to see Macy's windows and then back to our place and turning in by 9, I caught up on computer stuff emails and social networking.
this morning we were up and out by 8:30, up to Rockefeller Center and wlakog all around. I recommend Toasties for a good breakfast, yum eggs and bacon and toast. I just love the Apple Juice bottles they sell here, pure juice and kosher, I forget the name but I think you can see it in the photo. walked around some more, over to American Girl for gifts for my mom, Lindt chocolate where I spent less the $100 on chocolates, ha.. then down to Grand Central station and the Bryant park, and then Time Square, then back here, pizza by the slice and she got some beer at the drugstore... I ran an errand to 2nd avenue where our host said there was a grocery store, it was closed!! wah wah. but it was a nice walk and of course all the santa pub crawl guys are walking around today.
tonight she's decided to stay in and off her feet, and I'm about to run out and git the pop up flea one more time ALONE, and then up to time square to buy a Swatch watch. and whatever I may find. yay! cheers all enjoy the season and the weekend. :)

put it out...........

end is nigh.........

last week of classes, I made it!! woot woot!!! I have three classes of final assignments to get graded and into computer, catch up on some late things turned in and the week will wrap up nicely...looking forward to getting out of town to NYC on Friday morning. I have my credit card back down to zero and got paid just last Friday, I still have $500 in my truck stuck in a Missouri map from all my moving jobs, so I plan to use that as some mad money while there.
Something interesting, I found out about an English Professor job opening at the Christian college very near to where I live and go to church.  The qualification are having a PHD which I DO NOT! However, I've told myself I'm going to apply anyway just to see if they would even interview me and just to have my name in the hat. can't hurt just to keep me fresh on interviewing (which I am not great at!! ha) and also just to see what it pays etc or if it would inspire me to pursue a doctorate or not. I'm actually very happy where I am and could teach 10 plus more years until retirement....but doesn't hurt when there is a job offer that pays more and is closer..
I also was contacted today by my former roommate that I taught with and shared a barracks with in Kabbuul in 2008. He is getting a 3 year contract together for an Eng. lnguage school in Saudi.  I told him I already had a great steady job, but I would put the word out where I work etc... so we'll see. The cool thing is that as a 3 year contract, there is the chance I could fill in during the summer for somebody at some point if needed and yeah, I'd HOP ON THAT definitely. Ha
btw, I got my haircut last week, Thursday night, went back to the guy Hector from last time. we decided I didn't want the shaved sides, and since I'd shaved off my beard for the last week of school and the trip coming up, I asked for jsut a clean tight cut.  He was super friendly and talkative and we caught up from when I saw him last time, he kept asking about my friend A that I'm taking the trip with and then we talked about something else I dunno but eventually it got down to him asking me if I dated men or women. ha ha!! so funny.... it was about the time of after the cut, and I found myself leaning back into the sink getting my hair washed and all  I think he was asking why I was single or had been single so long.....and I pretty much just blatantly said well for insecurity reasons I've never dated women (I dont' know what that was supposed to mean ha) and for religious reasons I've never dated guys either, and then explained that I've attempted to live a life that would have me labeled for my faith not for being gay or straight and that's what I've pretty much been up to for many years, and single.  he started talking about what guys he knew and what type of guys did I like!! ha ha. so funny, anyway when I got home he had friended me on a social network so it's good to know we can develop a friendly relationship. he had a bf btw for 3 years living together etc.. he's a super cool guy and great barber/stylist also!
well I"m going to get back to papers and if I'm lucky maybe do some Christmas cards tonight? I doubt it though, at 9pm a holiday baking show comes on.  Anyone else watch the cheesy cornball Lifetime movies this time of year? I love them, they are funny and safe and easy to watch, the acting and writing can be SO BAD!!!!! but it's all underscored with this easy listening soundtrack music. last year they involved the son or daughter of Santa falling in love. and this year they all seem to be a single mother or father falling in love at Christmas, although last night there was one with the Ranch hand of Santa falling in love with....a single mom of course. ha!  I know I'm the wrong audience because all the commercials are for mattresses, cat products, gift chocolates, or women products like painful intercourse?!?!, but alas, I have a sentimental heart and will continue to watch them! :P
guys, give me some new ideas for NYC!!! any new stores? euro brand names? interesting sites? what is a good Italian restaurant that's not to fancy, A has requested such.  I plan to hit a Pop Up Flea that open up this Friday west of Union Square, that should be something! :)  I'm thinking maybe SOHO shopping or Central Park on Saturday, we're hitting Rockefeller Center and Today show Saturday morning, Sunday morning tickets for 9/11 museum and Wicked Sunday night. everyone have a great week . Enjoy the season! :)
