Liu Bolin art

I read about this artist in Time magazine and immediately went online to find some more photos. Here's a link to a few more pics..

His art searches for the meaning of the individual identity lost in modern China... tell me what you think. :)

get thee to Arkansas....

just sharing a few photos from my visit to Crystal Bridges, the new American art museum in Bentonville, Arkansas... such an excellent time-line and choice pieces of art. If you're ever near, check it OUT! :)

the 3rd photo is Wayne Thiebaud, "Supine Woman"

and the banner pic posted later below is Andrew Wyeth's

lazy thursday

well we had tons of rain last weekend and I was thinking about it yesterday and how I hadn't heard my sump pump come on lately, and sure enough it was unplugged. with about 7-8 inches of water in the basement area ( about a walk in closet size, just enough for pipes and a water heater) under the house. I proceeded to take off my shoes and socks and wade over to the sump pump and plug it in...however. next problem it was overflowing at the laundry drain. I plugged that up and then the kitchen sinks filled up and overflowed onto the floor. great!
well I spent the next few hours going up and down the steps and out to the back porch with a 5 gallon bucket to empty some of the water. the water level was just right at the bottom of my water tank, and although I had very hot water last night before going to bed, this morning it was lukewarm, no more hot.
I called the roto rooter guy first thing this morning and had him come over. he found a few roots going out towards the yard from the clean out hole under the back deck. then he found a bunch of gunk going in towards the house... after a while we had the pump back running and emptying water from below... now I'm doing laundry to wash all the towels and stuff I had all over the floor last night. AND I have a hair dryer propped up against the pan under the water heater to dry it out and hopefully get the filter dried up so I can relight the pilot light. URGHHH.. I've done this once before so I hope the water heater will light back up like it did last time.
oh yeah woke up with my back feeling very stiff and my shoulders tight, I think from hauling all the water up, i dunno, but I took an Aleve and slept in some , no swimming today. yuck.
otherwise an uneventful day. the plumber guy was an Iraq vet from CA who lives here now with 3 kids and recently divorced, a sort of libertarian type guy. nice enough and I got out for $99 for the service. SO that evens out with the $100 I earned yesterday for helping my friend move furniture in and out of different trailors where she sells them on a lot.
btw, same friend is a lesbian with a wife here in town and she was trying to think of who she knew that she could set me up with. ha.. I told her I pretty much though I knew everyone here in OKC but maybe not... she knows my whole faith issues and such so we'll see what happens with that. She also spoke about how her wife and her have tried to artificially inseminate the wife 3 times with no luck. I was joking around about me donating for free and they could try the turkey baster method ( seriously, it works, this male nurse guy I know here in town has a kid with his lesbian friends that way). ANyway, I doubt either of us were serious, but I was sort of thinking about the ethics and trouble and responsibilities it would entail. I've so given up on ever having kids, I couldn't even imagine what I'd do in that situation. But I have to honestly say I'd definitely consider it if it ever came up for real. I hope everyone's enjoying a great spring break.

Moonstar for Monocle..

my new must have shoe---, not really but Monocle Magazine has them here if interested...
I'd wear it this summer, I'm completely a slip on shoe in the summer type guy. however,
I doubt I'd spend the money, and I'm not yet sure if I'd know what size to wear.
I'm a 42 for European shoes and they have these sized at S - 41 and M -43 etc...
although I suppose putting Dr. Sholls footpads in them would help the M, I'd have to try them on in person to actually spend that amount. I'm only spending money on plants this time of year... Acer campestre 'Carnival' came last week, and this week it was 30 silver oxalis bulbs. :P
spring is here, and these two weeks off for spring break means only one more week of March and then WOW 2 months TIL SUMMER!!!!! woot woot woot.

tiny furniture now on netflix

it's a personal narrative about this girl returning from school to NYC and dealing...nothing about furniture .... :) it's slow going and serious, but I liked the natural dialogue and bare emotions and feelings shown...

sunny SUnday in AR

arrived here in AR Saturday evening to find some homemade pizza ready and waiting for me, got to see my bud J's kids before they were sent off to bed, and next caught up with him and his wife for a while. planted some things outside in their front beds for 'em and then J and I left to the downtown pizza place for some gellato ice cream. Ran into a married couple I knew from college there and said hey and how I wanted to see his house because he used to have a tile shop in town (he's an elem teacher now) and I'd heard he had cool tiled stuff all over the new house. ha
anyway, we left from there and went to a little coffee shop downtown and sat down and talked about his business trip to Houston this week and my job prospects and his work woes etc.. ha Finally made it to my hosts' place and we sat up late watching "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" with Robert Downey and Val Kilmer. I didn't think it would be much but the more I watched, it really keeps your interest and has a good mystery plot. THe funnest part of watching the movie is to see how inept the Downey character is at playing like a P.I.
Sunday morn I went to my former church here in town that I went to in college. said hi to a few people I know from there which was fun and enjoyed actually getting to hear some hymns and praise songs. My church has mostly just praise songs or radio Christian music songs which I don't really favor much for worship, so I like hearing some good hymns now and then. my ex gf T met up with me after church (she goes to an Episcopalian church in town) at my hosts' place, and then all 4 of us with their 2 kids went out for Mexican food lunch, and then Crystal Bridges!!! the new American art museum in Bentonville AR. Very grand place! completely landscaped and beautiful outdoors, and inside tons of ART! The early American is very well represented but I was most thrilled to see Andrew Wyeths and the Norman Rockwell "Rosie the Riveter" for the first time I got to see a Vik Muniz original!! :) He's the guy that did the "Wasteland" art documentary project I blogged about before.
Anyway, there were many other highlights but those are the two I remember most now.
we came back home and while buddy Cl made dinner for all of us, T and I and Cl's wife SH sat around relaxing and posting pics online waiting for dinner. man he whipped up some excellent food fast, yum! his basically made some grilled chicken strips, and a corn dish, man that corn! it was made with onions, garlic, dried tomatoes sauted in a pan, corn added, basil, and served with mayonaise and chili powder put on top and mixed in etc.. That's all I remember what he said he made it with but man it was GOOD. we also had salad and such, and then peanut butter pie for desert from the fridge that SH had made day before.
today I'll get over to a former roomie house to see his family and check in on his studio and what paintings he's been up to lately. he's a "plein air" artist.
hope everyone is off to a great week. I'll be driving back to okc this evening and going to try to post some of the non-flash I pics from the museum ;)
