idols and essays...

I had a lot on my mind today... I stayed up way too late last night getting the papers graded since they were promised to be handed back today. and since I couldn't turn off Am Idol ( my favorites were all the blond girls and the white headed chick), I was up until 1 am getting it all done. woke up with that feeling of being up too early for a flight at the airport even though it was my usual 630 alarm. and then the news on tv about the Dutch guy that lost his gold medal because of his coach's mistake, and all day long I couldn't decide if I felt worse for the speed skater or his coach, I still can't decide, just so unfortunate for both! anyway, I really stuck to my list of things to do in class today in what little time I had which is about 50 minutes tops. pass out quiz, take roll. insruct to get work out with name on it for me to initial as I come by. peer review activity, comma mini lecture, and then pass back the essays. I barely had time in two of my classes to read part of my favorite ones in those classes. one was this gnarley looking tattooed smokey smelling skinny tough looking guy who always wears a jean jacket. turns out he's a dad, and he wrote the most wonderful descriptive paper about visiting his Italian grandmother in Texas, describing her yard, manner, and how she taught him how to cook lasagna...
The other was this Pakistanian guy who wrote about when he was seven. His mom told him to watch his brother as she was busy preparing lunch, and his brother ended up knocking into the table and having hot tea scald his front side. He wrote of the terribly guilt he felt and how his mom put slices of tomato on the kid and his dad coming home to rush him to the hospital... I hope to someday have a moment to tell that writer that in my culture we don't expect a seven year old to be responsible enough to keep a kid from getting burned, I could tell he still feels very much to blame. This other guy who is rought looking tattooed red head guy dress really rough somedays, and then other in tucked in button up shirt and slacks. he really seems to be very earnest in his return to college. well anyway, he wrote about how he and his brother and mom moved in with the grandmother a few years back and how very religious and disapproving the grandma was, he ended up in jail somehow, and when he got out the granma was really sick and completely different looking, and he wrote about how she died and he felt like he really let her down because of the way he was living and how rough it was for the family when they all moved in etc.. and the disapproval he knew the granma had... ahhh.
there were many others like this one girl who had cancer as a kid, got married and moved away from home, divorced and moved out east working at hooters, and then one day moved back here to go to college and how estatic her family was and how much she loves spending time with her granma. this other freshman guy wrote about how he fractured his spine as a kid and couldn't walk and thought he going to be paralyzed but after the surgery he suddenly got back his feeling and then able to move etc etc... many were about first time trips or graduations. others about getting caught shoplifting, first time at a nudist colony, breaking a knee, going sledding, playing in a band, and becoming a jehovahswitness. yeah that was an interesting read...
worked out legs today and will sleep SO good tonight after only 5 hours last night. blah
tonight's idol, if anyone's watching, I like the hefty guy in the tshirt and guitar, and the last guy. of course the two tall guys very cute. :)
