weekend getaway.........

Good morning from Portland!!!  man is it beautiful here!!! so green and trees all around and rivers etc.. it's my first time in the NW and I feel like it's going to be a pretty awesome weekend. I had a long day of getting here yesterday, though it was relaxing enough. I never felt any rush in getting places, but it made for a long day. I drove down to Dallas from OKC and went through Coppell and had a sandwich at a Jersey Mike's.  then over to the DFW airport parking place. Parking Spot North.  got over to gate E. and the shuttle driver very nice guy. He told me he'd never fly Spirit again because he sent his 12 year old kid alone to LA, and paid a $100 fee to have him escorted to and from the plane, and they lost the kid when the flight landed, kid was lost for an hour an a half, and had happened to go back into the airport when he'd forgotten his backpack and his aunt happened to be there and saw him. anyway. he wasn't happy and the company sent him a form letter email twice saying it would be "investigated" and that he would NOT get a refund. which they also said twice on the phone, even though he never even brought up the $ part.  anyway, I guess for suckers who choose the cheapest flight blindly and click. like me, they fly Spirit airlines.   but all I can think of is ghetto ghetto ghetto.
well, it was worth the drive to Dallas because the flight was only 4 hours. (Props to DFW for the free wifi at the gates and stall less Br's) BUT our flight was late in arriving so we didn't leave Dallas at 3:40 but instead at 4:40 which got me to Portlnad at 7 instead of 6. alas! okay one more thing, and I'll shut up about it.  by not paying an extra $10 or $20 to pick a seat on the plane with more leg room. I was in the back third of the plane in seats that don't recline and seriously spaced apart enough that your knees barely touch the seat in front. ha ha. man oh man!!
the thing is , signes and brochures everywhere are pushing what SAVINGS this is, but you're not really saving if you're paying for your carryon there and back, and for beter seating and any drinks or food on the flight. why not pay another airlines and just relax and enjoy the trip.   ahhhh life experiences and lessons. i love it. :)
I bought a New Yorker and Time magazine in Dallas and read those on the plane. I let my subscription run out a while back, I think during the presidential election because it gets so politically sided. but I do miss reading all the articles in New Yorker. it's just the writing and all the stories of random goings on in NYC itself. It included an article about schools in Atlanta GA that were cheating on all their testing and about the pressure they were put under to get kids to pass. really made me relate with my former OKC school pushing us to get those scores up. this sort of impossible situation where half the kids don't even have a mastery of English at all OR came from Mexico with NO math skills and in 2 -3 years in the country. I also read through the TIME magazine about political stuff going on, you know the whole world falling apart all over the place. it actually included a photo of a guy sleeping at the school in the gaza strip which was recently bombed this week. oh, also I had on my Bose headphones the whole flight from Dallas which really made it nice.  My bud S had given them to me, and as dumb and douchy as I thought I'd feel wearing those things. they really work, cancelling out extra noise and you just sort of quietaly listen to your ipod music and then suddenly you're there. ha
upon arrival, first thing I did at the airport was walk into a Pendleton store. I love their stuff. I looked at all the $230 blankets, nope can't do it, but love 'em! and then some shirts. they make the best wool flannel shirts!!! not heavy at all and great for winter warmth. anyway.... I got a Budget shuttle to the rental car place. again. a very nice guy talking it up on the shuttle. Either it was just my luck, or I've been stuck at home and work way too long. ha ha.
my car is a little Fiat. a sort of 5 door square looking thing. but I like the windows all around , although it has terrible highway noise. I drove down here to Tualatin and met my host. we went out for dinner and I was proabably rambling on and on. he's a pretty serious quiet thinking guy and i was up later than usual at 9 here which was like 11pm for me back home. and then up til after 10 here which was like midnight fo rme.  I slept VERY WELL though. very comy bed here.  we're going to hang out this morning, talk about all his plants and business here. drive around a bit. and then before lunchtime at some point. I'll go back into portland and meet up with my high school friend. She has all sort of things wanting to show me and do and hang and see. I'm really excited.  It is high about 100s this weekend in okc and here only in the lower 80s! a great weekend to get away.
hope everyone is having a good summer weekend.  I'm completely off work until reporting back for meetings on Aug 11th. and then classes start back up the 18th. but I'm still loving my new teaching job. looking forward to the second year of it.
