camera shy?

Saturday morning from TX/AR

good morning from Texarkana. I had the best time in Dallas yesterday... woke up and relaxed around the house catching up more with Randy and his husband, breakfast and getting ready for the day. his hubby went off to work and we did some yard work out back and then up to Home Depot for a project he was working on... when we got back I checked my messages to find an email from a former student from central america. I had asked her about going to lunch.. So I got all packed up and left to drive into Dallas and meet my former student M for lunch in Addison TExas at the Astoria Cafe. I hadn't seen her since her high school graduation other than pics on facebook. We hugged and then began talking non stop about our lives since I had taught her in 8th grade and her college experience and my work experience since etc.. great time..
Next I headed out to North Haven Nursery near Forest Lane and 75.  I was pretty excited to find a leatherleaf viburnum for only 29.99 which I've only found for about 80 bucks in OKC.  I purchased it and left it at the nursery to pick up today on my way home.
by 330 or so I was on the highway crawlling south towards I30.. fighting traffice and trying to get out of the city. ughh.. eventually made my way out east and passed through my birthplace of Greenville texas, next a long boring drive and finally Texarkana.  arrived here at my college buds' place.  I went to college with both the husband and wife. the wife was a fellow English major /teacher and study pal.  they have 3 kids etc etc. We had lots of good discussion last night about how churches seem to fail in ministry to college age kids an how a HUGE percentage of church raised kids end up leaving the faith. sad but true.  We also discussed the usual gripes about hymns in church and rock bands that are too loud but it's all for the good of God etc...
but man the yard here, I think I found a place where everything grows and everything stays green!  nothing like dry hot Oklahoma.  we drove around the city last night and checked out a few sights.  I stood on the state line in the middle of downtown with one foot in TX and the other in AR. today I'm going to tour a garden I've admired online and then come back here for breakfast with the family. (they're all sleeping in).
been a great summer weekend so far! cheers

well deserved rest!....

men serving well....

hello from big D....

yesterday I waited around a bit before heading out of town. I was waiting for some speakers to arrive and other things.  First on my mind was the print tshirt I'm been going on about for a while which I wanted to wear around Dallas, well it never arrived and I called and they said probably today or tomrrow it will arrice. dang it, had the outfit all planned out for THIS trip, ah well no big deal.   I DID receive the computer speakers I orderd off of amazon, Altec Lansing brand that replaced an older set I had from Best Buy that when i went to buy new ones a couple weeks ago, they quit carrying anything close to what I wanted.  I bought a cheaper set that sounded awful, so I took them back and then found the Atec ones online.  They arrived yesterday! also a few plants came in the mail that I didn't want to leave on the porch while I was gone all weekend.
I also went and had my favorite pizza lunch in town since I will be gone all weekend. then jsut ook my time waiting for the mail and getting stuff in the yard ready. My bud Randy here in Dallas got a new house about a month ago, so I wanted to bring down a lot of plants as a housewarming, a Nandina, Arkansas Amsonia, and 3 starters from seed of Castor bean plant.  also a bunch of flower bulbs I dug up and we're going to put in pots today.  He and I share an interest in landscaping.
anyway, I got on the road by 3pm and listend to NPR radio news all the way down. arrived around 6 about the time they were leaving to see his kid sing at a church thing, so I drove around a bit and found a place to eat a sandwich and then a grocery store to buy some milk for breakfast this morning.
His kids went  home with his ex wife after the thing, so I got to hang out with R and his husband the rest of the evening just talking away and catching up, it was awesome. they showed me all over their new place and the backyard and discussed plans for this or that.  later we watched an episode of the Walking Dead. which I'd only heard of before and have never seen, so I got all updated while we watched a season 3 episode 2. whoah. ha
looking forward to this morning and going out to Dallas, stopping off at a YMCA for a swim, and then off to discover what I can find, bit of shopping at NorthHaven nursery and maybe northpark mall or Mocking bird station, dunno, and then on my way to Texarkana.
hope you guys are all getting ready for a fun summer weekend. cheers

Zzzzzzzz

midweek log in..

still enjoying a great kick off to summer here... I got back to classes Mon and today. I have a real good mix of people in the class. mainly college age kids a few older married types. good okc type students not so rich and not so poor. And they're not completely silent like my last class was. ughhh.
There was one student Monday who lacked quite a bit in his writing after we did the initial assessment essay. this is done the first day of class so I can get a sample of writing and make sure they're not in the wrong class. for example this guy who had really basic writing with a lot of misspelling and tense problems and spelling I with i.  anyway, turns out he had failed writing II which is required for people coming in with low skills or scores etc etc.. so I was preparing to meet him before class and tell him to transfer out and taking the writing course again as a prerequisite... but lo and behold, he never came to class and his name was off my role so he had dropped already. whoosh...
speaking of Michael Phelps.. ha ... I've been swimming every morning so far this week. and going to gym in the afternoons ... so heck yeah keeping active.. have I ever mentioned before that when I'm swimming laps in the morning my imagination runs sometimes and I think about what if I was a kid who lived on an island and I had to swim to school every morning, and like this morning I was swimming some extra laps and imagining that I'd forgotten something at home and had to swim back before going to school. ha I know it sounds crazy but whatever works to motivate.  sort of like when I'm walking or running on the treadmill, I think I've mentioned it before, but I imagine my body is like a puppet hanging from a string right through my center, and that makes me stand up straight as possible while on the treadmill.
well anyway, lot of swimming this week and I plan to continue tomorrow morning, then tomorrow afternoon I'm taking the new truck down to Dallas for a road trip. staying the night with my bud Randy down there, and then Friday night going over to Texarkana, and then Saturday night back to Dallas, then home Sunday.yee haw, that's what summer is for, some time off and getting out of town now and then.
hope everyone is enjoying the week. :)

more phelps...
