new york saturday...

oh man I was up so early at 430, at the airport at 5 and taking off at 6. I went ahead and paid for an internet connection at the airport which was a dumb idea because when I got to dallas, the airport had free wireless anyway...got into NYC by 1240 and got out of the airport and on a bus to manhattan by 10 til 2pm... I like to take the express bus, $23 for a roundtrip ticket there and back. got into grand central and the subway down to Fulton downtown to my bud's apt. dumped all my luggage off, went and got some cereal and milk and some flowers to put on their entry table, and then hit the streets! back out into the city by 330. ha walked down near the trump building, then subway up to village to shop at Monocle store and bookmarc, took lots of pics of santas all over the street for the santa pub crawl today going on. next went up to time's square and shopped my favorites Quiksilvr and Billabong, got an awesome hooded lightweight stretchy fitted shirt, going to hit the quiksilvr in soho before getting anything since they told me that store had WAY more to choose from. Everyone is so nice at the stores near times square. I know it's sales but they really do work it. a few guys asked me where I was from and how long in town etc.. next made it over to rockefeller centerna dshopeed a bit at Uniqlo, walked dowon to Sak's, next a new store called Joe Fresh, pretty cool Canadian brand which is like a more accessible brand of Club Monoco.... walked down to Bryant Park and shoppped a few little shops there, subway to union park for some of my favorite gelato at Amarino! I highly suggest the hazelnut, and the ameretto, so good! finally got back to Fulton by 10 and caught up with my bud, we took his dog for a walk and went to the pier where he showed me all the stores that got flooded over there. The apartment across the street from his is daek and empty. they had their basement and gaslines runied somehow and all tenants had to move out! crashing now in the hallway of their studio apartment like a long L. they are in the opposite corner in their bed with the tv on, but I'l lfall asleep fine, i walked all over the place today. cheers all!

pool party...

week over! ugh

man, I'm so glad to get Christmas break started, but it's bitter sweet a little bit, I can't help thinking about going back to the job in January... alas. but I can enjoy all the time off for now! ha.. I was thinking driving home today that sometimes it sure does seem a lot easier to fit an eggroll into a hamburger box than it is trying to fit a taco! If you don't get that, just think of my ESL job. The only other analogy I had seemed too racist about making silk purses out of pig's ears etc... it's not a race issue, it's a poverty level issue, totally socioeconomic/language/I dunno...
NYC! now we're talking! I'm just sitting here listening to Christmas music and marking little dots and arrows on a map for my trip. so far there are places like museums, e.g. The Morgan Library and Museum, and TOpman and Stadium(Norse Projects stockist) in soho, and K-way, also papabubble candy store and Bookmarc statinary store (both recomended by a ready! and both mentioned in the same issue of a recent NYTimeOut, ha I'm suspect he works there.) Of course the Monocle store, some yarn and ribbon stores, Barney's and Saks and Dean and Deluca and some vintage clothing stores etc etc. there's a home store somewhere near the university I need to try and find... I need to check back to notes from last year's trip! also of course Amorino, my favorite gelato place at 60 university pl and 10th. yum!! of course Rockefeller center and all that.
My bud's new place is lower manhattan near John and Cliff st. south of Fulton. should be interesting being in town this time during my stay and not over in Brooklyn. ANYONE suggest going over to check out shopping and site seeing in Williamsburg? I was considering it, I know they have tons of new places over there. that reminds me, I need to add Steve Keene gallery on my list of hits. ha tonight I'm just getting packed and ready and about to have dinner with good buddy S and catch up since he's always in AR seeing the bf or they are here or I'm out of town etc etc. so we got to catch up!!! ha part of the packing was preparing for rain! ha, hopefully with the weather in the 40's I can just layer everything, but I'll prolly wear a coat just to have one at night. Noel noel noel everyone!

another semester

I finished my night classes tonight. woo hoo! got tricky there getting all the final essays graded. I printed out the late essays that students mailed to me Monday at work and then forgot them in the office, so before class today I was in my adjunct office getting the last 4 papers graded, plus a few other late assignments I allowed into the computer. Tonight's class was quick and painless, one last in class essay and then goodbyes. :) I had time while people finished to get all those done also! DONE! came home from class and got some more planning done. well first off I have to every night get the skillet and plate and bowl cleaned from the kitchen sink for breakfast the next day. next all clothes laid out for work tomorrow... then I started thinking about my trip this weekend. getting things over to the pile of things I plan to bring. One thing I did tonight was I looked back through a picture book that my sisters made me for Christmas last year with photos of our NYC trip. I was looking at what I wore last year so as not to repeat stuff this year. ha I know way too much thought going into this, but if you see a guy in an amazing looking Norse Projects blue and green plaid shirt/jacket walking around manhattan next week, give a shout "Dan". :) the fun I have in planning my trip is getting clothes packed such that I'm bringing as little as possible yet everything I bring can be mixed and mathched PLUS combined if needed due to cold weather, it's all about layering! so instead of the same wool coat I wore last year, I'm thinking layering a few jackets and wearing wool sweaters etc.
I've also already planned to shave the beard Monday. that way I'll have it for the first half of the trip and without the last half. :) I'm down to bring just 2 pairs of shoes which is pretty good, 3 if you count the one I wear on the plane. If I have time I hope to buy a few OK t-shirts to bring as gifts, an Eskimoe Joe's tee for his gf, and maybe a Thunder tee for my former student J. I will see another former student from the same class, a girl L who currently studies in NYC. So things are lining up, if I'm lucky I might get a the chance to run into blogger bud Mike my last day there, his first.
my day job is going well this last week of school. we have a big science vocab test tomorrow that I tried to play games with the kids today to study for. I am also going to bring a bunch of small fake christmas trees tomorroe. the table decoration kind, for them to decorate individually and then take a picture with. My goal is to print the pics and send them home with the kids to give to a parent etc... another project I have in mind to finish the week with is to illustrate with a puppet show, but I'm losing confidence that will happen since we are currently studying plate tectonics and rock formation. I know I could come up with a puppet show about anytying, but it's hard hard hard to get these kids to be creative, bless their hearts, they are just not raised with the same background and haven't learned to be creative.
my first hour of kids were cute today, I brought this snowman stuffed toy from last Christmas to school. The boys in first hour couldn't wait to hold it and play with it. one guy was making the arms move, another kid say there with it in his lap with one arm aournd it while he did his worksheet. ha. Really makes you wonder about all the play and fun they never experienced growing up poor in Mexico. these are 9th grade boys! ha time to crash. more busy planning tomorrow. I want to write down all the kids adresses tomorrow while at school to send a post card from nyc (my 12 newcomer kids). yawn....

get up and move around a little....

box this...

boxers or briefs? well I'm usually a boxer brief guy for the support. briefs at gym, sometimes boxer briefs if I'm lazy and want to leave 'em on and not put on briefs. I'm boxer all summer long except with jeans or linen drawstring pants. I wear boxer in the winter with dress pants if they are too tight, because I like the fly access when going to bathroom at work. I think Kelly asked about this topic, matching boxers/briefs to outfits. There's a part of me that always wants to match colors of briefs to look, but sometimes I just let it die and throw on the nearest clean pair. I think a lot of the reason it's easier to do that is I don't change up at the gym anymore like I used to so who's gonna see anything anyway. ha
btw, thatguy in TX, I was wondering if you knew I coming to Austin. I almost emailed ya, but since it was such a quickie trip with the whole day Saturday dedicated to birthday friend, no time. next time around in Austin though maybe we can catch up. ExFratguy, this post is for you btw, I came across the two boxer pics and though one of 'em might catch your eye. :) I know ExfratGuy definitely leans more preppy in his taste compared to me leaning more rough/tatted guys. but we can agree on cowboys and frat guys no doubt.
Did anyone finish up their Christmas shopping this weekend? I'll be doing a bit of that next weekend in NYC and otherwise my yearly wardrobe installment shopping. Most of all looking forward to just walk walk walking and discovering something new. I'll take any suggestions for fun places to hit up, I think I'm going to try to hit the flew market in Williamsburg this time around. perhaps? Of course Time Square for maybe a new swatch watch and check out what Quiksilver and BIllabong have to offer. okay that sounds really touristy and lame. how about I plan to hit ROckefeller center for the macaroons from that little bakery across from NBC!? also the new Proenza Schouler store I read about in some design magazine, not like I can afford anything that brand but I want to see the store in person... and of course Barneys and Topman woo hoo. :P

in other words...

Holiday Music anyone?

I thought I'd share these two songs. I like to include one or the other when I'm putting together a mix for a Christmas CD for someone to add something a little unexpected. The first song is from a cd of Woody Allen Classics and although not exactly a Christmas song that I know of , what with the jingle bells and horns in the song, sounds Christmas enough to me! :)(and I recommend the whole cd for a nice mix of classical music) the other one I heard on public radio a few years back. They're both on itunes btw. you got any other suggestions?
