another school year...

Well I didn't have too many students yet this week. We only have 4 or 5 newcomers so far and the really exciting thing is that 2 of them are from Burma! that makes for ENGLISH only instruction! woot woot. the best way to learn. although i have to completely hold back using spanish with not only the mexican students, but also I slip into spanish tring to explain something to a student sometimes by habit, and with an asian kid, that ain't gonna work. ha
So far my favorite is this kid named "Lal" from Myanmar/Burma. He is SO SUPER respectful, friendly, and eager to learn learn learn. that attitude will be refreshing in the classroom this year. I also just like his name because one of my favorite episodes of Generations star trek is when data tries to make a "child" named Lal and its a really sad episode. ha We actually have 3 or 4 different Burmese refugee families this year so that is pretty cool. I was trying to think of how I have to keep just as motivated to help the Mexican immigrants as well, and try to think of them also as refugee as sorts, seeing how difficult things are in that country etc... hard to do though when the attitudes toward possible futures are completely different.
I do have ONE second year class with some of the former students, either from last year's newcomers or those who are repeating a second or third time because they are not learning any English and can't test above level 2.5.(levels or 1-6, with sections for kids 1-2.4, and 2.4-3. and the rest just go to regular classes). that will be only a handful of kids and then I'll have 15 or so more from the new 9th grade class depending on their score.
All kids who speak another language are tested at the end of the shcool year and ESL placement is based on those scores yadda yadda, are you asleep yet. boring! anyway,
I love this time of year, getting the newcomers started with saying the alphabet and numbers and playing various games to get them into their mind... I'll continue with letters and numbers next week, and then practice identifying sounds of letters at the first of words, and then we'll begin with basic words and phrases etc... on and on.
BUT hopeuflly I'll only be there a couple of weeks, as the facilitator position is waiting. I had a great interview Wednesday and now just have to wait for procedures and paperwork before I can move over. yay for the raise I'll be getting. and getting me OUT of the classroom (which I'll miss actually....a little) I will be starting another college class one night a week starting the last week of august which will be nice. I haven't seen any posting for the faculty position I want. but I'm thinking they probably have to go through a process of getting it posted and interviewed for... if I DON'T land the faculty job I will just wait to see if the language school ever comes through. either way I don't see myself in the facilitator position for more than a semester, the great thing is that the raise will give me a better negotiating number IF i can land the faculty job. still with me?
I'm watching a lot of Olympics today and visiting my friend A. She and wife are having a barbecue party tonight so I'm going to drop by and say hi this afternoon and then go back over there tonight. although not for long depending on the crowd... uh huh. According to the facebook invite list there is a diverse crowd of guys and gals etc so we'll see.
other plans today include going out for pizza for lunch and watching a netflix dvd I got inthe mail while the Olympics are on. "frontrunners" a documentary about high school elections which looks really really good. but probably jsut cause I'm a teacher. ha cheers.

i hope I get it....

hot hump day pant pant

that's only because it's over 105 and crazy hot today here in OKC, and although I don't feel AT ALL like getting on the bike and riding up to the gym, I must. I must! ha
had an interview after school today, I've pretty much got the job, just need to take a formal structured interview and then let them post the position and me apply etc etc..
crazy thing is I am still hoping to teach at the college full time but there is nothing posted yet for me to apply for....so there ya go. crazy thing is I got an email from the former roomie who is heading up the language school south of OKC and he wants to put me on salary once the contract goes through in October. gee whiz when it rains it pours. it was a lot easier just hoping that there'd be some other option come up this year besides teaching again at the high school, and now I have to make all these adult grown up decisions about taking the best job not just for the most money etc... ha
the language school job is the more exciting romantic option, make way more money and have the opportunity to travel once or twice a year overseas.. ahhhH!! so perfect. BUT it's year round and no pension plan, so IF and WHEN the faculty job comes up, that is definitely going to be my longterm dream job plan. since I already know I love teaching college kids AND I love to have the school calendar time off for yardwork. Actually the school calendar will still give me the option for travel so there ya go!
all the students returned today and I spent most of my day walking around and getting kids into class and helping finding their classes etc..
the worst thing is I'm a pretty talkative guy when it comes to anything going on in my life (oh really?) and I wasn't able to say anything to the team I teach with at the high school today about the job interview or leaving soon hopefully, that was difficult.
tonight I plan to stay inside and cool after I get back from gym. it SUCKS being so hot out, I will be outside a few times turning on this or that hose on the yard, but sometimes it's so hot you just feel like not even watering and just letting it all dry up and die!! UGHHHH so HOT!!!! UGHHHH. okay I'll stop complaining. winter thoughts.
Olympics tonight! aweomse, loving watching Phelps go for more medals and how he's more relaxed in interviews . very awesome.

last night I watched Olympics, muting it at some points, and watching a foreign film "The Swimsuit Issue" on netflix online. It was a pretty interesting friend flim, not all that sexy, but entertaining enough considering friends and family relationships in the film. :)

shirt and tie

I have to get a shirt and tie ready for an job interview Wednesday after school. And this is not at the college. I'm still waiting for them to post the position of the faculty member who resigned... Today, I received an email after lunch from the district ESL director asking if I was still interested in a facilitator position at the district office. SHU WEET!!! heck yeah I would be interested.... so I am going to speak with him Wed. It's pretty funny because just this weekend all I could think about was an opening coming up at the college. now this! crazy that it all happens at once. I will honestly take either into consideration, although I'd really rather teach college. the facilitator position will get me out of the room with kids for now. and either job is not even a guarantee. there will be PLENTY of people up for the faculty job I'm sure.. anyway, that's the only new news today. :) I had a move tonight with my friend A so I made some extra $$. otherwise watered stuff tonight and watched lots of Olympics. I've decided the whole chik fil a thing was SO LAST WEEK and this week its OLYMPICS!!! I said the same on a social network for my status. let it die and don't beat a dead horse. ha Another teacher work day tomorrow and then kids on Wed. whoosh, my summer is pretty much OVER.

bro fun...

that's (sports) entertainment...

this first one reminded me of Mr. Bean at the Olympics opening.

I like how the commentators sort of are stumbling wondering what are we seeing exactly.... ha
and the last clip, mmmmmmmm..manhandle that white boy! love that wink... ;)

plan b

I've had a spectacular weedkend. a mix of Olympics, yardwork, and netflix! ha. also a pool party yesterday, not so much a party but my bud S invited me over to mike and bruces for a couple hours in the pool, and they had asked over Kyle and bf and a friend Seth who were all from Stillwater. then another guy came over this younger 25ish architect twink. ha so lots of sun and good talk...
yesterday morning I was watching Olympics and muted it every now and then and watched "Harry Potter Order of Phoenix" on dvd. I started tearing up at a few parts...I'm not sure if it was 'cause it was so early in the morning or just the seriousness of that movie. I rearranged the furniture yesterday while doing a deep clean vacuum. I like that feeling this morning when you walk outside your bedroom into the main room and everything is crazy picked up and clean and new. ha Last night I found a great film on Netflix called "Plan B" made in Venezuela  Argentina in Spanish. It's a slow paced romantic dreamy little film. All about this guy who wants to get his ex gf back, so he anonymously befriends her new bf to break them up by proving the bf is really gay. What happens instead is they become very close friends who end up as confused straight guys not sure who they're in love with. anyway, worth checking out if you have a lazy day to just enjoy a slow moving tale. I guess I use the word "dreamy" because although it's a 2009 film, you don't see much of cell phones, and so people are just spending time together or alone thinking and wondering and talking. no continuous obsessive interuptions of cells. ha. I'll include a trailer to the film:

I had my own plan b come up last week, considering my JOB! ha I returned back to work Friday at the public school, the kids coming Wednesday. While I was at the college later that afternoon posting grades, a dept head came in and mentioned that a faculty member had retired. SO I"L DEFINITELY be on the lookout for the posting for THAT POSITION. fulltime at the college would be awesome!!
so things may take a complete different path for me, considering I've been waiting for the new language school to open come January. although i WILL say the language school would pay quite more, the college job gives me breaks and summers and I dunno might just be a much better fit. nothing is for sure, but will be fun to try for both and see what God has planned. :) hope all have a great Sunday. bring on the rain!
