team effort

are you done yet?

The Cult of Done Manifesto

  1. There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion.
  2. Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done.
  3. There is no editing stage.
  4. Pretending you know what you're doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you're doing even if you don't and do it.
  5. Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it.
  6. The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done.
  7. Once you're done you can throw it away.
  8. Laugh at perfection. It's boring and keeps you from being done.
  9. People without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right.
  10. Failure counts as done. So do mistakes.
  11. Destruction is a variant of done.
  12. If you have an idea and publish it on the internet, that counts as a ghost of done.
  13. Done is the engine of more.

AR dreams

hey guys, pretty busy all weekend but I'll try to keep up with some posts. I am in AR for a big Christmas parade/light up the town tomorrow night. the whole town comes out for it and my college buddies have a party afterward. it's super SHWEET. also I can run into tons of people I know down on mainstreet. lots of fun etc..
drove up here tonight right after school to go on a home tour with my married friends that I stay in town with. I got here late so I dropped my best bud J's house while I waited for my friends to call me back and tell me where to meet. he answered the door in a tshirt and his boxers and I gave him a big ole hug. we're really into hugs these days. I wasn't sure if it was a bit longer than shoulda been. ha. I walked in and said hey and the kids were already put to bed. his wife came in, gave her a hug and said hello etc.. I plann to go over there and hang with them all tomorrow.
I met up with my friend down the street and walked all through this old old house all decked out, then we drove to 3 others, and I ran into all kinds of people I know from town here. a great night, crashing now and let the weekend continue! :)

show me some love...

dog or cat

watching a good show on tv tonight called "why we love cats and dogs"... ahhh. I don't have any pets but I could go either way. cat or dog. I've put it off for so very long because I don't want to be some single guy who's only company is a dog or cat at home, but I've been single for so long anyway, maybe I should have gotten a pet. ha actually mainly it was because I like to travel and i didn't want to bother anyone with what to do with my pet while I was traveling. so I dunno.
I'm pretty lazy and it takes a LOT of time to do it right with a dog, as far as getting out and playing and getting activity with the dog. Cats are probably easier overall when it comes to all that.
anyway, this work week is unbelievably SLOW. ha everyone is just in a zone of counting down days to break. at least this teacher is! I am so glad to have a few more days left, and then next week just 3! yippee leaving THrusday for NYC. and then return for 3 weeks off work. oh wow. of course I still have 2 night classes to show up for the 12th and 15th. it's a last ditch effort at essay writing in class, and I usually ask they keep it a page or so. mainly it's a chance to get 50 more points for writing just about anything, I usually grade based on if they use paragraphs, an intro, conclusion, state a thesis and back it up with points throughout. too much to ask for a Comp II class??? I say not!
I had to make a few phone calls after school today. started out the first one in Spanish and then thought to ask "habla Ingles?" and she said yes.. .oh so much easier to explain after that. the kid that came back from 5 days suspension Monday has been calm all week but got more relaxed today and was asked to remove headphones and ipod in class and attempted putting back on, also last hour jokingingly said "lend me your bike or I'll punch your face" which I know he was , I had to ask the aunt he lives with to make it abundantly clear that post columbine a student must not ever ever threaten a teacher or use that language ever ever etc... I explained both things and that the kid needs to know he's "caminando un lasso corta" walking a short rope. and after returning he should realize the very next thing will get him written up and suspended again! all that jazz. the kid is a really nice kid, but you can tell he's really angry and hating life right now and does NOT want to be told what to do by anyone. ahh well. eventually I hope to get an opportunity to explain to him that look, there are a lot of tough guys in this school and real jerks, many big ole guys older than him and they can be real jerks and all cool and tough with their friends OUTSIDE of class, but in school they do the work, don't cause trouble, and make it work etc etc. social skill set stuff. he's making wrong decisions. I know he misses his pregnant sister though who left for El PAso two weeks before thanskgiving.
The other phone call I attempted, the home phone was Noe and Heather's answering machine, and the mom's name is Olivia.. hmm and then the mom's cell phone was a wrong number, twice they told me in English nope wrong number. the two uncle's phone number were out of order, and the next phone number of a friend was a fax machine. WHen this happens we refer to the principal and truency officer and they will have the kid come up to the office and give them a working phone number etc etc blah blah. sorry if this work stuff is boring you stiff. pics coming up soon.
I graded the papers of that 2nd night class I took over, and man they had some awful ones. I am going to passionately be laying out some guidelines tomorrow night cheerfully and excitedly with motivation and clearly defined terms. MLA MLA MLA and how to cite and how to use easybib.com to make a work cited page. and how 4-5 pages is not 3 pages etc etc etc.
not back to the last 3 essays left to grade. :)

(Tyler Mcgill from CBS)

tune day

back from the gym, yes made it up there and back and even had a workout routine. I need to get tightened back up, dad gum it all!!!
I'm easing back into things doing my "28 days to..." workout from Men's health a year ago. man I loved that workout. my plan is to east back into it, and then switch to a body part a day like I dad while overseas. blah blah. it's all so boring after a while, I know. ha
class last night went really well, of course I'll have to wait and see what I get back for their last essay next week. one lady chose a topic of why gay couples should not adopt kids. I had to tell her that she'd have a hard time but if she could actually find research to back it up, go for it. THing is some people have all these religious beliefs they think they'll write about and back up with a bunch of bible verses, but that is not really an academic paper since you're not going to have every reader consider your religious book a reliable resource. I tell my students to refrain from proving some religious belief and save those topics for a philosophy or religious study class. I did have some intersting topics turned in last paper that I hadn't seen before. one C paper that wrote about how prostitution should be legalized, she basically talked in circles and provided hardly ANY research. and then another one about castration of sex offenders. which was very well researched and discussed physical and chemical castration and what countries allow it etc.. very strange but interesting and I think she got an A.
THis Vietnamese high school kid who is in my night class last night said he was online applying to a University and at the end noticed he didn't qualify without a full year of an art credit. He said he could still apply but did not.. All the other students and I were telling him, yes, do it, send it in anyway, you're awesome etc, you never know. try try.. ha. anyway after that conversation, I woke up this morning thinking about the position at Admin and thought to myself. Go ahead and apply for it anyway, just to see what it's about, what it pays, and if I would even be a good fit or want to do it or not. SO today I did. we shall see if I can even get an interview or would want to take it. after teaching the last 2 days, I thought to myself, maybe it's time to not deal with the stress of these kids every day after all. ha who knows. mostly I was thinking if I did get an admin job I would still get to teach to a community college class at my other job, so that would keep me teaching something, which I love today. absolutely. :)
anyway, if anyone out there likes religious Christmas music, here is a clip of a local artist who's an excellent writer/performer. SHe has a new Christmas album out on Itunes if you like her sound. (skip to 1:35 if you don't want to hear her intro...) check it out or not. :P

gay on glee

well I haven't been keeping up with Glee this season at all, I mean I liked the first few seasons and the song and dance and soap opera tales...but then after the kids never graduated high school after pretty much acting like they were seniors the first season.. .I dunno the characters all sort of just seemed their age, like college kids or older. Of course I like all the Kristen Chenowith episodes and Gwyneth Paltrow. ha
well I watched an episode during this break from a few weeks ago. One where the gay characters Kurt and Blayne(Darren Cris) are talking about waiting before they go all the way. And then there is this guy from Blayne's former school who's coming on to him and stuff. I dunno I was sort of having trouble relating. First of all the couple discuss holding off and how that's what masturbation is for etc.. TO me it just seems sort of hoaky that two teenage MALES would stop themselves from comparing and sharing, especially given the freedom of being OUT and GAY and a COUPLE.... or am I not giving the modern day male sex enough credit of having that much control? I guess it's good for a story line, and true I've read many blogs of gay guys who never have fooled around and are waiting for the right one/time. so maybe.
another thought I had was later in the show when the couple are invited out to a gay bar and go with their fade ID's, and guess what, it's drag night, so there are the stereotypical gay drag queens here and there among the maybe 25 guys at the bar. and of all the juke joints guess who had to pick this one??? yup, the former closet football jock bully from Kurt's school. except now he's at a different school where nobody knows he's maybe gay, and he likes this bar because he can be comfortable with people who understand him and he says "apparently I'm what they call a cub." ( does that translate as 'bottom boy' does anyone know?) It's all so normal and wonderful here at the other side of the rainbow in this gay bar where everyone is in their own conversations hanging out and a few on the dancefloor etc...
Have I been stuck in OKC too long or is this an actualy depiction of a gay bar somewhere in the US? I wasn't buying it, I've been to gay bars in CA, Iowa (not sure how to abbreviate..oops), TX, NY, and FL and they all seemed way more cruisy loud and way different than the little friendly place on Glee. And what about the whole online connections these days, aren't kids finding all they want there first? no? I know on tv they show a pretty picture of everything sort of glorified. ANd I think it's great that the characters are even on tv, then everyone gets to see that gay is beyond sterotype and I suppose Glee shows us that being gay is not all about sex, practically beating us over the heads with it in fact, Do these gay kids ever have sex or ever talk about it? There was a portrayal of the guy coming on to Blayne, he was talking about meeting a guy at the club and hooking up and after 20 minutes who cared what his name was. I guess that is to show another side of gay guys who just sleep around for fun. And the funny thing is aren't they allowed? isn't that the stereotypical male bravado to sleep around as much as you'd like? should it matter gay or straight?
I suppose before Will and Grace, the most liekly common gay character was maybe jack tripper on 3's company. ha and he wasn't even gay but he would act stereotypically gay in a switch when the landlord came along. eww It is good to have a varitey of characters out there, there've been many on Real World no doubt. a good friend mentioned a Canadian movie called "Good Neighbors" that has gay characters and the whole thing was brushed over, the fact they were gay was just a side story.. well I'm not griping about Glee, just sharing thoughts. my only gripe was the lingering aging stars on the show. ha
I'd like to think and post later on the difference if any of gay guys raised religious and those not raised religious who still have a moral sense of waiting for the right one/time etc.. and why and what is considered "wrong". I think my family's faith the way I was raised made me consider being with a guy all the more wild for the whole taboo of the deal. yet, the taboo excitement also made it difficult for me to consider the contact within the frame of a real homosexual relationship. whatever that is. I know there are some beautiful relationships out there where guy/girl or guy/guy. and there are guys out there straight or gay who only want to have sex with different people. I suppose Glee attempts to show that young gay guys don't have to follow into that stereotype and can take it slow and wait. Does that feminize being young and gay? isn't it usually the girl that waits out on losing virginity and the guy who's always primed and ready? If not isn't it the religiously raised guy most likely to hold off pursuing sex before marriage? Will legalizing gay marriage inspire gay guys to wait until marriage? does any of that sound normal if you consider when you were in high school or college and there was only thing one thing on your mind waking up fresh and ready to go every morning?? ha

more male bulge...
