employed again....

well I got the job at the school that called last Friday. I notified the college today that I couldn't teach the daytime classes this fall, and they were supportive and got the classes reassigned today and even gave me an evening class on Mondays. so the extra income from that AND the online class I'm teaching this fall will come in handy (think plane tickets)...
I know it may seem like a lot to take on while getting back to fulltime at a new school and job and all, but I thrive on that sort of keeping busy and up with things type of work. I have to wait for the HR dept to contact me about the new hire process but I already know from other teachers that we'll report back the 16th. and then I"ll prolly have some sort of time consuming drawn-out new teacher meetings next week going on... now what shoes shall I buy when the first paycheck comes in Sep?? ha. I hope to continue living frugally but will take care some around the house stuff like windows and faucets, tires for the truck... ok this is getting really boring... anyway....
in other news... I invited my ex gf from college to this years Thanksgiving with my family. She was alone last year and I know she'll get a kick out of my family plus I like having someone aroudn when all the ladies are talking boring stuff and the guys are just sitting around the tv or asleep. Me being the single guy, I usually start helping out my folks by putting chairs away and cleaning up the kitchen etc.. like some old maid! so this year my baby will keep me company and help entertain the family.
oh yeah, i have to mention I worked REALLY late at the water park tonight and tomorrow night. they southwest baptist youth convention is in town and they rented the park one night for boys, and tomorrow night for girls. all staff on park also has to be guys or gals. so tomorrow I'll have to stay in the office the entire evening... I checked out the crowd tonight from 10-12am and everyone had their shirts on... and here I was wanting to get a glimpse of some hot sexually repressed southern studs in their swimwear.. ha ha. alas....
one thing got on my nerves tonight was some of the girls in the office kept going on and on about the group and making fun of them etc.. it just really rubbed me the wrong way, 'cause it reminds me of how some Okies don't have a very large world view. It's difficult to open your mind to new cultures, ways of living, worshiping, others' religions/beliefs. I mean yes it's odd the whole separate boys and girls bathing together thing, but ya know what, I'd want someone to respect my faith regardless of how ridiculous and different it may sound. That lesson comes from living overseas sometimes and thinking of new and different things not as "wrong" but as just "different". This group was doing something as simple as just not swimming together between genders.. and they just could NOT get over it. so the more they went on the more discouraged I felt. I think this comes from my sensitivity of accepting people no matter what from how I grew up scared to death being pegged gay for being different than other guys. But I also have to consider the sensitivity to cultures in general, especially after teaching Muslims English overseas a few years ago, and we had great conversations about our different religions, respectfully...
I'm bound to learn some sensitivity to illegal immigrants this next semester as many of my English students will be exactly that..maybe some things about kids around the whole drug dealing gang culture as well-- yup it's pretty much that kind of public school. bring it on, I'm ready!

monday oh

8 am interview, 2 principals 2 teachers at a table with me.... the principal pretty much sounded like "why would you want to teach at a school like this?..." in some of his questions... I mean I wasn't worried about the gangster student body all that much until they started going on about the many students who don't speak English and never graduate etc etc.. and how they weren't a school with a big sports program and were always trying to push school spirit etc...asked me would I go back to my old school if they hired me and why their school... my land. look I just want a TEACHING JOB at any school!!! but overall I have to say I did a pretty good job backing up questions like what would I do my first week with the students, what techniques have become my most effective in the classroom, how would I handle a student coming up to me and saying I don't really like you, etc etc... not to mention the "girls" and "boys" metal detectors entering the school. oh yeah and every door locked that I had to walk around the school trying to find out how to get inside.. oh man, anyway, so I got home by 9:30 and went to the water park on my day off with some friends and her kids. had a great time and got lots of sunburn, then came home to a phone message to call the school. they tell me they have another interview tomorrow but really like my credentials and that they will call me tomorrow to set up the next meeting this week...I guess that sounds pretty good although I'm getting a little nervous what I'm getting myself into here... but I'm trusting God's will above all and ready for the definitely challenge. steady income and dental insurance again could be coming my way. ha
