class and random thoughts ( like Mikey....)

Sometimes while reading from the book in class I'll use a different voice. not that often or it'd get really annoying and distracting but when the feeling is right and feel like I want to get the class attention just a bit I'll take on either a country twang or a east coast accent. ha.
man it's always good leaving the gym feeling a little wobbly on leg day..
I read this article on prop 8 today in new yorker and it really had me thinking about the show "modern family" and how many of my facebook friends love the show, and I couldn't help wonder if they would support something like prop 8 or not as lovers of a tv show portraying a male couple with a child. The article mentioned gay men who whether or not ever planned to get married are still involved as a stand for equality. So anyway, it'd be interesting to know if any of the hollywood-type supporters in the mix had anything to do with getting the married dudes story line on the Modern Family. it can only help the eventual sway of change in the country. I know that whenever I'd hear people say something about Ellen or Will and Grace putting gays on tv, I could only think how they'd been watching Cheers or Friends for years with people sleeping around non-stop and not blinking an eyelash etc etc. same old story...
I look forward to getting some shared experience essays back next Monday from my students, their first paper to turn in. There are always some good ones, and they are jsut young enough to really put themselves out there, talking about the death of a loved one, parents as heroes, making to college, or tons of other random open hearted stuff....
btw there's quite a good art program at my college and I love how some of the students in my class are all big dreamers about becoming musicians, photographers, artists, filmakers...
anyone watching Am. Idol? there was this guy Dave Pittman from Dallas that didn't make it past tonight, he looks really boy-next-door cute.

more wrestler bulge

I really like billabong, quicksilver

I was thinking today, at what point did I become so solid on the billabong and quicksilver brands as part of my "style". well first of all it's sort of ageless, as far as getting older gracefully like you'd consider any surfer or guy in a band and still dressing "cool". also I thought back to growing up and how my "skater" friends were probably guys I tried to relate to more since they weren't on sports teams and neither was I. I went out for basketball til 9th grade and then nevermore... I remember hanging with my basketball buddies at the football games and then the football guys at the basketball games. It was a pretty small school and I remember how weekend parties in highschool had everyone hanging out with everybody, jocks/skaters/preps etc.. One summer night I snuck out and we headed over to this friend's house out behind town with a bike ramp out in front of the house aside the long drive. His parents gone all weekend, and a group of us sat up at the top of the platform of the ramp staring up at the stars, this was later after a party of everyone inside drinking beer and smoking up. man those were good times. I never smoked or drank in highschool, I was pretty much a quiet observer of it all...but looking back there were a lot of us churchy type kids in the mix, only few of us actually abstained..(me until college that is..that's a whole nother post) at this time I was wearing preppy polo shirts and mall-bought button-up shirts and long sleeves etc...
when I went to college, not only was the experience of a Christian school new and comfortable for me, all the guys on my hall were pretty average like me, guys into music, bands, intermural sports. I found a group to hang with slightly rebels, always onboard with their faith, a few MK's in the group that kept it really interesting...and later in college I had a few roomates both in bands which I'd end up following to all the shows on weekends helping set up and break down gear and maybe videotaping some of the shows..this was on the tail-end of grunge rock and I never quite rocked the flannel shirt as jacket look quite as much as everyone else was wearing.... I guess all this influenced me to appreciate the laid back band-guy look (I'm thinking Weezer, BareNaked Ladies, and TMBG). My college buds are now graphic designers, or into broadcasting ,and some have random business jobs or missionaries. I still like the graphic T. and what I really like about the icy blue t shirt I bought in NYC last dec is that it's a size medium and fits so comfortably, sort of styled not so tight fitting (that's so 2008, 7?) and hangs just right on my chest etc.... ahhh
anyway, here's a shirt I found online today maybe next on my list....another draw to these brands must be that I grew up in OKC away from any beach and knew that the surfer lifestyle was never never never something I could be... but really any surf brand is just all about summer to me. less clothing, SUN SUN SUN long days warm nights. tan sweat fun etc...

3 more days to the weekend right....

have you ever been doing stretches at the gym and thought, if there's one thing I'm really good at is stretching... I thought that yesterday, shoulder day. this cop I like to watch work out was there. he's sort of like a cross between the Rock and hispanic guy, I can't figure out if he latino/asian, or American indian or hawaiian or what. but he's buff buff. we never speak of course other than a few polite hellos, heys, or miming across the floor "are you using this??" with a friendly eyebrowes raised look on my face...
no sub jobs today so I'm home with 2-3" of snow on the ground outside. boy it's going to feel good getting south to Houston this next weekend. highs of 50 I think but I'LL TAKE IT! I've been coming home every day last week and this looking for a box on my front porch from when I left my coats in Dallas. but alas, there's been a slight delay....well something I can still look to forward to..plenty more cold days ahead in okc. I'll post some photos first thing once they are returned, i can't wait to get back into 'em while it's still winter.
classes are going well and my students this semester are really different than last. I assigned a goals letter assignment about why they are in the class and in college etc.. and It keeps me motivated seeing how hopeful they are in their responses. Many are the first of the family to go to college. some are returning moms, some are dropouts from earlier tries at college and now trying to manage more time. and then others are out of work and going back to college for a different better future...and they all say good things about learning to write better. first essay due next Monday, so when I get back from Houston I'll have plenty to grade.
I got a text from the male nurse stud asking 'bout next dinner. I'm hoping this time I can get the dinner and am looking forward to it. not having a roomie any more definitely increases chances of romances...I plan to work out chest today before lunch and then go back before dinner to swim laps. cardio must do more cardio and get off my butt in front of this computer screen.... :)
